Insects/Bugs/Bees/Butterflies - Long-horned Beetles - Amorpha Borer
Class:Insecta Order:Coleoptera Family:Cerambycidae Genus:Megacyllene

Amorpha Borer (Megacyllene decora) is a soldier beetle named for its tendency to lay its eggs in the Amorpha (False Indigo) plant. The Amorpha plant and beetle are Ohio natives and a bit of a rarity. Its species name, decora, (latin), roughly translates as "Adorned","Elegant", or "Decorated"; all of which seem to apply. The beetle is bright yellow in color with two black markings that cross both wings, long antenna and pinching mandibles. Although I found these on Goldenrod plants in our yard, I do not believe it is the more common Chauliognathus pensylvanicus, or Goldenrod Soldier beetle. The black markings on the wings help in identifying their specific genus and species, and the Goldenrod beetle has one, long, black spot on the lower section of the individual wings. Photographed these beautiful yellow and black beetles frolicking on Goldenrod in September.

All species pages are currently being updated with more useful descriptions and information.
