Insects/Bugs/Bees/Butterflies - Ants
Class:Insecta Order:Hymenoptera Family:Formicidae

Ant (Family Formicidae). It is estimated that there are more than 20,000 diferent species of ant on our planet. More than 12,000 of those have already been identified. Ants are so incredibly widespread that they appear on every continent but Antarctica (though who's to say a few haven't traveled there by accident, by ship or plane?). I would normally provide the genus and species next to the common name, but for now, I am keeping this category broad, and the ants pictured may very well be a mixture of genuses, and definitely a mixture of species. Ants are super social, well known for having clear divisions of labor, social heiarchy, and for working as a collective whole toward common goals. Their individual strength is mind boggling. Some ants can haul up to 20x their body weight. Imagine if a human could just throw 3000 pounds of something over their shoulder. It would be incredible. Ants communicate with one another in a variety of ways, including pheromones, sounds and touch. "The total weight of all the ants in the world is the same as, if not larger than that of all humans." - antark.net
