Insects/Bugs/Bees/Butterflies - Bird Grasshopper
Class:Insecta Order:Orthoptera Family:Acrididae Genus:Schistocerca

Bird Grasshopper, Genus Schistocerca. There are about 50 different species of Bird Grasshoppers, in the Genus Schistocerca. Though this genus is known for swarming in great numbers, known as locust phase polyphenism (one such species even made it into the bible), the North American species tend to be more sedentary and less prone to gathering in masses. The Latin name means "Split tail". There is a light colored line running down its back that might be helpful.

All species pages are currently being updated with more useful descriptions and information.
